Urge people to call up helpline to report sightings

Vashi : In view of the upcoming Nagpanchmi festival set to be held on July 26, Plant and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) Mumbai is seeking citizen to inform any incident of snake catching.
"As per Wildlife Protection Act 1972, it is a crime to catch snakes of any other wildlife and use them for business or even own them, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 prohibits ill treatment and maiming of snakes and other animals," said Founder and Secretary of PAWS-Mumbai Sunish Subramanian.
PAWS- Mumbai will be holding a rescue and first-aid service camp on Nagpanchmi Day. The city-based organisation will also look into the release of the captured snakes into the natural habitat under the supervision of forest staff.
Subramanian added that it would be better if the government takes more stringent legal action against those who maim snakes. The organisation has launched a helpline especially for citizen to lodge a complaint against anyone catching snake or ill treating the reptiles. PAWS-Mumbai can be contacted on 9892179542 or 9833480388.
