Thane : This Nagpanchami if you happen to come across a snake charmer giving a street performance, call the nearest animal activist or forest authority.

Animal activists in Thane are sending out an SOS ahead of the festival on July 26.

"In Indian mythology, snakes are worshipped," said Sunish Subramanian, founder and secretary, Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Mumbai.
Nowhere does it tell us to worship live snakes. Today, instead of being worshiped, many snakes are ill treated by snake charmers."

The number of snake charmers is comparatively less due to the awareness created by environmentalists.

"But some are still on the loose," said Chandrakant Kangralkar, an activist.

Enviro-Vigil, a Thane-based NGO, has also initiated awareness drives in schools.

"We clear myths and fears attached to reptiles," said Deepali Devle, co-ordinator.
